Knew nothing of Diane von Furstenberg’s first husband Egon who gave her the famous last name, lineage, and her first taste of partnering with the sexually indiscriminate. He was very cute in his day - a tough act to follow for old, wizened homosexual Barry Diller. Was she ever with a straight guy or is she the Liza Minnelli of the fashion world?

Prince Egon could have played Larry's fair-haired brother in Three's Company!

Diane has always been more interested in money and power than in cock.
And she has succeeded admirably.

[quote] "I remember telling him I would give him a son. I meant it to be seductive; instead, it turned out to be prophetic,” Diane later wrote in a Vogue essay, describing the night of their engagement.
OK, this tells me I am a different species than straight people. "After you fertilize my eggs, I will gestate a male heir" is about the least seductive sentiment I can imagine.

In 1973, Diane and Egon were profiled by New York Magazine in a story titled “The Couple That Has Everything. Is Everything Enough?” By Linda Francke (who now goes by Linda Bird Francke). The article painted the couple as both promiscuous and passion-devoid. “The only way for a relationship to survive, I think, is to have no sex at all,” Diane is quoted saying, while Egon discussed his penchant for sexual experimentation, noting that the couple “tried it with another woman.”
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 2, 2022 3:08 PM |
What did she say about gays and lesbians that the article decided not to reprint?

by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 2, 2022 3:37 PM |
Diane is a triumph of glamour and styling over actual physical beauty. She developed an iconic look early and stayed with it.

The photo in OP illustrates how challenging the styles of the 1970s could be. The proportions were off.

This was around the time when infotainment media started getting a little looser with their usual self-censorship and started experimenting with printing things they would have previously hushed up. Many tears were shed and by the time Donald Trump came along they’d gone back to the old rules of being coy about telling what they knew about public figures so they didn’t upset celebrities and lose access.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 2, 2022 3:53 PM |
Royals tend to be wildly perverted. The more names, the freakier their deviances.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 2, 2022 3:54 PM |
R29 Well they certainly didn’t self-edit. Everything printed they supplied themselves. I think she jus didn’t like the picture it painted once published.

Diane should always have had bangs.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 2, 2022 3:57 PM |
R7, what Diane said 50 years ago that In-Style could simply have ignored yet chose to make a fuss about, was that she's into femmes, not butches (Diane likes women). It's a tad hypocritical to criticise Diane von Furstenberg for saying in 1973 that butch lesbians are like men, when the message butch lesbians are being given in our more "enlightened" times today is that they are really trans or non-binary or should chop their tits off.
[quote]Egon admits that were he to meet an attractive man, he would not be loath to experiment. But Diane is not so sure. "Homosexuality is a kind of narcis- sism," she says. "It's like making love in front of a mirror. It's a big bore. Besides, what is the point of being a woman if you have to drop yourself two stages to act like a man? Butch dykes upset me. A pretty, attractive woman? That's different." woman," Egon said. "There were three of us. But you know what?" He shrugged. "It other was just twice as much work for me."

by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 2, 2022 4:04 PM |
She was interesting looking. I get the allure. Frankly, she had a modelesque look—all the ingredients to be conventionally attractive, but just off the mark with a few, which made her more interesting to look at than a straightforwardly pretty woman. She was skinny, had good skin and a lot of hair and was white, and those are all the boxes that really need to be checked for someone to be dolled up and admired in the US and Europe.
Disappointed by the homophobia but not surprised. She's ancient and she's an elitist snob of the type who asserts her social self-superiority by assigning others into financial and social castes—in other words, a living embodiment of the whole spirit of the fashion world.

The article is lovely about their relationship, which continued long after the marriage. But the comment is sneaky given r35 quote of what she said is bland, especially considering the time it was said, her age and their circumstances. Good for both of them.

Trump deficiencies, personal and professional were widely known and even remarked upon, "short finger vulgarian". His deficiencies were passed on as strengths, ie using the term "populist" for someone completely inexperienced.
He had long standing media relationships that gave him decades of free press which he used to craft an image appealing to a specific type of constituency that made his shameful time in office possible.
I don't believe the Trump organization socialized with the jet set Von Furstenberg, Warhol crowd. He's just a trashy kind of rich guy from Queens County.

I knew Egon, and Diane much less. She was and is ambition personified. Egon was a silly, nice and not very bright gay man. He hung out with male models (Greg Bauer, Carlton Fuller, HIEMcDonald etc) in the mid 70s. Spent many a night at Barefoot Boy and Flamingo with these guys. Greg and Joe were pretty good friends of mine, both lost to HIV as was Egon.
Diane is a survivor (which I respect her for) of the kind of squamous cell carcinoma (of the throat) that comes from HPV infection. When someone gets it in the throat it’s a pretty good indication of active cunnilingus- so you decide. She is NOT a nice person- she is the ultimate kiss up kick down type. Nevertheless I admire her for her success and as a survivor. Her current “husband”( who I assume is finally aging into retirement) is one of the most unpleasant and ruthless men I know of- Barry and Diane are not a cozy couple and have lived lives of total deceptiin and successfully applied ruthless ambition. I don’t understand people like them at all.

Diane has always liked the ladies and Egon was gay so they made a good lavender pairing especially so because they were genuinely fond of each other.
Why Diane married Diller is a bit of a mystery to me at least. I guess Diller wanted a trophy beard but everybody knows he's gay so what's the point? Everybody knows Diane is gay as well. Perhaps there's some business angle.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 3, 2022 1:42 AM |
It's about protecting Diller's fortune from taxes, R57. At least in part. He has no heirs before marrying Diane.
Diller is worth an estimated $4.2 BILLION. He has a priceless collection of art, much of which the public has never seen.
When he passes, Diane (and her two adult children) will inherit everything. I'm sure he has made arrangements for the charitable foundation he and Diane founded as well. And there's Little Island to keep up.

Charlie has been telling the same story about the von Furstenberg's for decades, which basically boils down to him having gone to some clubs and parties they were also at back in the 70s, which probably thousands of other people did. He even uses the same words to describe Diane (survivor, successful), giving the impression of being scripted rather than natural recollection.

That’s called consistency R84. And Diane was never at Barefoot Boy or Flamingo with the boys! My contact with her was very minimal and mostly through the designer Charles Nolan now deceased. Charles was partner to one of my best friends since the mid 70s. My contact with Diller was through my former partner now resealed who knew him quite well. I did not like Diller which caused a bit of friction with my partner. As I’ve probably said repeatedly, have to admire the successes of Diane and Diller if not them as people.
